¡Olé! – It’s time for the Feria de Abril

It seems like it is always Fiesta time in Seville but this weekend the famous ‘Feria de Abril’ opens its’ doors to locals and visitors alike. It is a colourful and vibrant extravaganza that should absolutely not be missed!!

This year the Feria takes place from April 30th to May 6th, one entire week of fiesta, fiesta, fiesta – if you can handle a whole week!!

The tradition is said to date back to the 19th century and the venue was originally a huge cattle market.  Now it’s very different but still very traditional and a great way to soak up the Spanish culture.

Each year one of Seville’s famous monuments is re-created as the main gate or ‘portada’ to the feria, surrounded by lights which are turned on to mark the start of the fiestas.

This huge venue is made up of a large fairground with rides, stalls, games, food and much more, and streets with ‘casetas’ (marquees).

The makeshift streets usually have the names of famous bull fighters. The casetas are where the celebrating really happens, with dancing, eating and drinking till the small hours. They are usually reserved by family groups or socios ‘clubs’ and by invitation only but there are also public casetas where anyone can enjoy the party.

Of course the streets are also full of people enjoying the event, dressed in traditional countryman suits or flamenco dresses and dancing the ‘Sevillanas’ – you might be able to pick up some tips from a local!

During the day you can see horse parades and cart rides and lots of fun activities – if you have already recovered from the night before!!

The event is brought to an end with a huge and impressive firework display. For sure a great chance to see Seville at its’ best and to enjoy some of the famous local hospitality and soak up the Spanish culture!
