{"id":1955,"date":"2016-10-27T11:05:20","date_gmt":"2016-10-27T11:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1955"},"modified":"2016-11-07T17:00:46","modified_gmt":"2016-11-07T17:00:46","slug":"celebrating-the-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.com\/blog\/latin-america\/mexico\/celebrating-the-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating death..?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1959\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1959\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ebaaf5fec670ab3a4ede4ddd79728d39.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1959\" title=\"traditional decorated altar\" src=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ebaaf5fec670ab3a4ede4ddd79728d39-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"traditional decorated altar\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">traditional decorated altar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing I would have loved to be a part of, it was the \u201a\u2018\u2019Dia de los muertos\u2018\u2018.<\/p>\n<p>Day of the dead!?\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t sound like a fun thing to attend!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to death, everyone has their own opinion about it \u2013 for most of us it\u2019s a thing we are worried about, an event that doesn\u2019t make us feel relieved and happy and definitely not a day we are looking forward to!<\/p>\n<p>Well\u2026 in most countries of the world we share this attitude \u2013 but not in my beloved Mexico!<\/p>\n<p>What they think, is that the death is a thing to celebrate, which means; on the 31st of October the whole country turns into a colourful pool of people painted with skulls, covered by flowers and filled with joy!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1958\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1958\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ddlm-jcpenny.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1958\" title=\"woman, painted as a skull\" src=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ddlm-jcpenny-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"woman, painted as a skull\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1958\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">woman, painted as a skull<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Not because you feel relieved and happy when someone you love has died!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s mainly a day of honouring your beloved one and making them feel like a superstar, by building an altar decorated with candles, flowers, their favourite foods and trinkets as well as a framed picture of him or her on top.<\/p>\n<p>Family and friends spend time at the altar, telling stories about the deceased and sharing memories they went through with the person who died. They also pray!<\/p>\n<p>They continue by writing \u2018\u2019calaveras\u2019\u2019, which are satirical, short poems about funny habits or embarrassing moments they shared with the person who died.<\/p>\n<p>The last part of this procedure is to visit the graves of your loved ones, clean and decorate them with \u2018\u2019ofrendas\u2019\u2019, or offerings, \u00a0like orange marigolds called &#8220;Tagetes erecta&#8221; or &#8220;Flor de Muerto&#8221; (&#8220;Flower of the Dead&#8221;) which are thought to attract souls of the dead, as well as ornaments the person liked.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1961\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/la-celebracion-del-dia-los-muertos-en-mexico.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1961\" title=\"woman, painted as a skull\" src=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/la-celebracion-del-dia-los-muertos-en-mexico-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"woman, painted as a skull\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">grave covered with flowers and candies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A lot of people may celebrate this day differently, but the rule says; after putting up the altar and visiting the grave, you set out pillows and blankets in your home so the spirits of the dead can rest after their journey.<\/p>\n<p>Then, finally, it\u2019s all about the food!<\/p>\n<p>Preparing traditional Mexican food such as sugar skulls (\u2018\u2019calaveras\u2019\u2019), candied pumpkins, pan de muerto (\u2018\u2019bread of the dead\u2019\u2019) and \u2018\u2019Atole\u2019\u2019, a typical local corn drink.<\/p>\n<p>When all is said and done \u2013 it finally comes to the party and honouring the deceased one by eating fancy food, dancing, telling stories and having fun!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1956\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1956\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/16-IMG_0348.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1956\" title=\"typical mexican food\" src=\"http:\/\/www.estudiohispanico.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/16-IMG_0348-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"typical mexican food \" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">typical mexican food<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next time I visit this exciting country, I\u00b4ll make sure to be a part of it!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re just about to visit the country and you\u2019re looking for the best place to celebrate it I can just recommend what everyone told me:<\/p>\n<p>Oaxaca is supposed to be the state where you can experience this day in the most traditional and beautiful way!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If there\u2019s one thing I would have loved to be a part of, it was the \u201a\u2018\u2019Dia de los muertos\u2018\u2018.
